What
Was Lost, part 2: Resurrection
Season 4, episode 3
Note: this is a mini-review to fill the gap until I get a chance to catch up with the full review.
In my review of part 1, I whined about general mistreatment of the characters and huge gaping plotholes. The good news about part 2 is that the characters were much closer to form, a few of the plotholes got filled in, and there were some well-placed doses of humor to lighten the episode. There were a few extremely satisfying moments as well; you can't help but cheer when someone who deserves a smackdown actually gets one.
There were still problems, though. Most significantly, the restoration of peace and a normal atmosphere to Arnessk is simply a non-starter: who cares? There were some techno-babble moments that didn't clear up anything, either. In the plus column, though, this episode showcased some amazing CGI of the dying Elack, even more spectacular work from The Creature Shop on Rygel and Auntie Pilot, and lovely (if a bit dizzying) camerawork of the transformed Arnessk.
While the acting was up to its usual caliber, the editing was a bit choppy; there were a few scenes that felt like they were started in the middle somewhere, particularly towards the end. Lastly I must note that, even though opinion has been divided on Jool, I am sorry we won't be enjoying Tammy Macintosh's gifted physical comedy on a regular basis, and hope that she will be able to return at some point in the future. Overall, "Resurrection" does redeem "Sacrifice" to a large extent, but it suffers from a fundamental disconnect between the purported theme and our actual interests.
