4.04 Lava's
a Many Splendored Thing
Change just two vowels and you transform a favorite
standard, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, into a typical Farscape
groan-worthy pun. This gorgeous
tune by
Sammy Fain, with sentimental (I won't say sappy) lyrics by Paul
Francis Webster won the Academy Award for best song in 1955.
Jennifer Jones and William Holden starred in the film of the same
title, a four-hankerchief story of an inter-racial love affaire
in Hong Kong.
2.18-2.20
Liars, Guns and Money
Warren Zevon's original plea for help was entitled
"Lawyers, Guns, and Money," and told the sad tale of a
young man in a South of the Border prison, pleading, "Dad,
get me out of here!" Check out Hank Williams' 1985 take on it, as well as Warren's 1978 original.
2.14 Won't
Get Fooled Again
A classic rock anthem from The Who, one
of several great tunes on their amazing 1971 album Who's
Next
(you know, the one where the cover photo shows them all,
um, zipping up after.) Check out this remastered version.
2.08 Home On
The Remains
The original, of course, is Home on the Range. It's
the Official
State Song of Kansas; have a listen [MIDI].
2.07 The Way
We Weren't
Barbra Streisand was more positive as she crooned this
theme song to the 1973 movie in which she and Robert Redford
starred, The
Way We Were. Here's a clip from Barbra Streisand's album.
2.01 Dream A
Little Dream
This standard, originally written by Gus Kahn, Wilbur
Schwandt, and Fabian Andre in 1931 has never fallen far from
hearing. It shows up constantly in mattress or sleep-aid
commercials. Here's a jazzy recording from The Gerry Mulligan
Quartet. The title is also closely associated with The Mamas and
the Papas, who recorded their own version of this lovely tune with Mama Cass's trademark
vocals.
1.21 Bone To
Be Wild
Well, not exactly... but "Born to be Wild" was
a huge hit for Steppenwolf from the 1968 self-titled debut album.
This biker classic is still justifiably popular
today.
1.12
Rhapsody In Blue
George Gershwin's signature piece; this is Gershwin playing
Gershwin.
1.10 They've
Got A Secret
The long-running television game show I've Got A Secret had a catchy little theme, but even better is a good
old-fashioned Blues number from Eddie "Blues
Man" Kirkland.
1.08 That
Old Black Magic
Another classic, written by the now
little-recognized Harold Arlen, who wrote many very popular
songs including "Stormy Weather" and The Wizard of Oz score.
1.06 Thank
God It's Friday, Again
A group called Love & Kisses recorded this theme song to the 1978 party movie.
Their version lacked the "again", but it wouldn't have
been out of place at the every-night parties that Volmae was
running.
